TANGO

WEDNESDAYS

with Nina Jirka

7 - 9:30 pm

Like jazz, tango is an improvisation –communication. It relies not so much on freedom but dependence and contact between people.

We encourage everyone, men and women, to lead and to follow. Please, wear comfortable shoes with leather or suede soles. To dance tango, high heels for women are NOT necessary! If it is not comfortable to walk in shoes, it is not going to be comfortable to dance in them.

Walk-in: $12 / Dance Coop Card: $90 for any 10 classes at the coop

As we bring our attention to our entire being, we will explore movement possibilities. This class will be an inquiry into anatomy and form as well as our personal qualities and dancing desires. With both phrase work and guided improvisation, we will move with subtlety and power. This class wants your input; it is a space to shape our dance together. No experience necessary.

Dance Mix for Kids

MONDAYS

with Nina Jirka

5 - 6 pm

September 18th - December 18th, 2017

GRADES 1 - 3
Our Dance Class for Children is a play on fluid form, using imagination and various methods to cultivate strength and coordination. Children are encouraged to engage in full-bodied movement that is informed by but not limited to ballet, martial arts, yoga, folk and modern dance. We lead students towards a search for moving voice of their own, as well as learning to dance together and cooperate as a group. Our classes are basic but challenging and require focus, dedication, and effort. All good things, habits and happenings in life come with efforts and humility. We get what we give. We would like to communicate this message to our students.

For semester: $160

Swing for Kids and Families

WEDNESDAYS

with Nina Jirka

5 - 6 pm

October 4th- December 20th

Swing dance is typically a partner dance with two roles- a follow and a lead. In order for that partnership to work on the dance floor, there must be significant communication happening! It also helps teach us social etiquette and can be used to create a culture of consent on the dance floor and off.

I teach Ambidancing. This is a style in which students are taught both roles (lead/follow) at once allowing them to learn the whole dance and not just one half of it. In this class students will be learning to social swing dance with each other. They will be focusing on improvising on the dance floor using the basics from East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop as well as classic vintage jazz steps from the swing era.

For semester: $150

Ballet for All

THURSDAYS

with Nina Jirka

9:30- 11 pm

November 2nd- December 21st

Using mostly traditional classical (Vaganova style) ballet steps and movements, we learn to respect and listen to our bodies, work with gravity and others in the room, connect to music and each other.

The class focuses on creating fluidity, awareness, alignment, balance, and correct breathing technique.

In this ballet class, we do not fight our body – we learn to feel it and work with it.

Walk-in: $12 / Dance Coop Card: $90 for any 10 classes at the coop
